Cinema Planeta was born as a cinematic initiative to promote greater care and conservation of the environment. In its first year, Cinema Planeta 2009, International Festival of Film and the Environment, was held in Cuernavaca, Morelos from March 11th to 15th, 2009.
45 films were shown from 20 different countries.
The International Jury that scored and selected the winning films was composed of Claudio Lauria, President of the Environmental Film Festival of Cataluña; Miriam Gast Loup, Programmer of the Environmental Festival of Paris; Exequiel Ezcurra, Mexican ecologist; Francisco Taboada, filmmaker from Morelos; and Gustavo García, film critic.
