In 2001, he directed the documentary War Photographer, which received the Oscar nomination for Best Documentary, along with numerous other awards around the world, marking a turning point in his career as a director. The Giant Buddhas in 2005 once again explored an issue of great political and world interest. At the Sundance Film Festival, in 2010, Christian Frei won the Best Direction Award for Space Tourists. Critics hailed this film for its impressive images and wealth of ideas, in addition to having strengthened Frei’s reputation as one of the most original and innovative directors of today. Genesis 2.0 won the Green Film Award from the Green Film Network in 2018, an award given by the most reputable environmental film festivals.
